Books and Stuff

IMG_1800I love to read, and my tastes are a bit eclectic, but I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite books. Some are good business books, others are about data and data visualisation, some are about customer experience and others are helpful resources in my world or just a good read.

I hope you enjoy the selection. Where possible, I’ve added a link to the book on amazon, in case you want to buy it (obviously other bookshops and sites are available!).

And feel free to join in the discussion – the descriptions are only my views, and I’m sure you will have your own, different opinions!

Big Data in practice Another useful book from Bernard Marr, this time featuring case studies of how companies have used Big Data in their businesses. Each case includes the challenge the organisation faced, the data they used, the technology used and the outcome. The cases come from a wide range of industries including many non-retail (often the default industry for big data cases). It includes some B2B and industrial cases, and a couple of SMEs.

This provides lots of food for thought – could the applications used (or the challenges or methods) relate to your own challenges with data? This is sure to provide some inspiration whatever field you work in.

Big Data - bernard MarrThis is a really useful book on Big Data. Bernard Marr is a practitioner and this book is very practical in its content and language. Bernard uses the acronym SMART to describe Big Data (like me, he finds the current term unhelpful) and prefers a more practical approach.

  • Start with Strategy
  • Measure Metrics and Data
  • Apply Analytics
  • Report Results
  • Transform Business

This is almost a “how to” book. I particularly like the fact that it starts with strategy – you have to know what you want to achieve and then work backwards from there (don’t start with some data and wonder what you could do with it.

Overall, it’s a useful and easy read for anyone who wants to understand the world of big data better.

by Marianne Cantwell, Available on Amazon

If you’re thinking about changing from the Corporate 9 – 5, this is a great book to help you decide what to do and how to go about it.

In 2013, I’d hit a point where I didn’t want to work full time for a Corporate anymore. Even though I loved my job, the company and the people, I felt I needed more life in my work-life balance. This book helped me to distil the ideas around what I wanted, and opened up possibilities other than just swapping my desk for freelance work. Because of this, I now run the Insight Magicians, but also monetise my other hobbies too – doing some photography and catering on the side, which gets me out from behind my desk. It also led me to thinking about travelling whilst working, so as long as I have access WiFi and tea, I can work from anywhere – the coffee shop, an agency hotdesk or my sister’s house in Portugal.

Who said you couldn’t have it all?

By Sandra Rendgen, available on Amazon

This is probably the biggest and heaviest book I own – it’s also one of the most beautiful and inspiring. It was given to me as a good luck present when I started Insight Magicians by the lovely people at Online Ventures. It shows some great examples of information graphics, split into categories of Location, Time, Category and Hierarchy, as well as having some fascinating opening essays. I use it a lot when I’m trying to imagine how to present data, and when I just fancy something different to ponder on.
